I had an interesting thought yesterday. Once you get to be a certain age, you start to really accept your talents and structure what you are here to do - fulfill your purpose. The day you realize that you are meant to work in a particular industry or field, there is almost a relief that at least the initial part of the struggle is over. You identify yourself with a set of goals and try your best to carve out a personal career path. I often wonder what it was like for the young Martin to accept such a tall order, and what he must have thought about when he decided to go with it. What made him frustrated, and how he measured his progress? Did he even think about not making it? Was he even fearful? Just a couple things I think about when I watch this speech. It’ll never get old because it is not phony. It was a genuine, heartfelt message addressing real people…

I'd like to take this time to thank *Flaaaaav-or Flav* for his dedication and commitment to changing the direction of pop culture. First as a part of the groundbreaking Rap group Public Enemy, and then again as the Original VH1 Reality Pimp. Now everybody's doing it - next up is our favorite Porn Star: Ray J.

Finally someone with talent and a recent hit gets some shine on VH1. I gotta say that Ray J is a very entertaining individual so I will be tuning in to see what he's got up his sleeve. One thing we can count on from Ray J is the finest Video-Vixens around. No uglies on this show - Oh no!

I know I'm gonna catch heat for this one, but this is the definition of how to work your situation out. Many of us laughed when "Auberella" laughed and cried on the Season Finale of Making the Band, but this Bytch is laughing all the way to the bank. Bad Bytch #60 (in no particular order) ... Aubrey "Auberella" O'day...

When Aubrey got Diddy-ed on MTV, we were all entertained. I for one thought that D. Woods was the only smart one for not showing up, but Aubrey stayed, got her free publicity and even shouted out a few folks. I thought it was a little wierd, but it really just speaks the way this business works - Give, but take as much as you can.

Now, she's even more marketable than before and she's pretty smart. She made her mark as a member of Danity Kane contributing to two #1 Albums and about 1000 reality shows, so we know she's got some talent. Put that together with her fiery personality, sex appeal, controversial comments, and celebrity connections, and my friends, we have a star. Her upcoming Playboy Spread, previous broadway performance and clothing line make this lady pretty tough to F%$@ with. There are some of you who would disagree, but like it or not, she's relevant. What can I say about these guys. They are a little bit of everything...They have a smooth but electrifying sound. I am excited to listen to them, yet they have this mellow, calming effect. Gotta gets it!

Stereolab – Chemical Chords

The album title is spot on. This album is for daydreamers...and people who like to eat 'shrooms all day...I hate to say it like that but it is what it is mon ami. Those Chemical Chords gets under your skin and into your bloodstream. Its great early-am music, but if I listened to it all day I'd get dizzy.

Staind – The Illusion of Progress

What an ironic title for such a consistently progressive body of work. I haven't heard the single, but we can expect the same solid ballads and driving rhythms that we have come to expect from these dudes over the decades.

Shwayze has got some pretty good hits, but I don't know if the album will live up to the hype. I'll have to wait to see. I can't get Buzzin' out of my head...that's normally a good sign...

Do people prefer a more ethnic image of Beyonce?

Normally, I steer clear of this kind of thing, but I have to step out and speak up for my girl. What is all the fuss about? The girl is light skinned - is that a crime? So they altered her photo a little - this is show biz. They make people look thinner and their teeth whiter - why is there no fuss over those things? Would it be better if they made her darker? Why are African Americans taking this personally? Would it be an issue if they made a white person lighter? Or darker? I really don't get it. If anyone has the right to be angry it's Bey. She is the only person represented in this photo.

I wouldn't want anyone trying to make me look lighter, but that's my personal business - just as it is her business for this photo.

One thing I did notice while looking around is a bit of a difference in photos. The first photo is the one that I originally saw. Of course I noticed that she looked lighter than usual, but it didn't affect me personally. Then once things started to get heated and L'Oreal released a statement, another (slightly different) photo surfaced. Check it out for yourself...

One thing that I find interesting is how quickly people have been to point the finger at Beyonce. I really don't think she photo shopped this herself. She most likely showed up, did what was asked of her, and collected her earnings. Besides, African Americans have been altering their natural appearance for years before Beyonce was even a thought in Tina and Matthew's head!

Weave and hair straighteners have been a part of Black women's beauty regimen for a long time. Many of those same women now have a problem with this advertisement. Then you have Young Berg and the like making comments about how dark-skinned women are not attractive to him. Most of the black women we see in the media have altered their natural appearance. Wouldn't it then be ideal to be lighter with straighter hair? Is this not the standard that has been set? Talk to me!

The one and only Jay-Z will be at Love tonight so I’d suggest you check that out. The doors open at eight so get there early because it’ll be crowded.

He will have already performed at the Kennedy Center (with John Legend) for the 3rd Annual THISDAY Music and Fashion Festival. If tickets aren’t sold out to this they range from $45 – 400.

Lotus Lounge is having a Friday night bash hosted by Jessica and Alexandra

Glamour Friday’s at H2O are sure to be hot, hot, hot!

Friday nights at Spank “1223” are always worth the parking dilemma – My advice, take a cab. The DJ will be spinning Top 40, Hip Hop and Intl Music.

Tantric will be performing at the 9:30 club and I know that will be hot!

Not like she’s better that the rest of us, or that we should be afraid, but we all know what she’s capable of. New Rule: Rule #2 if you know that you can’t say whatever you want, then don’t make Omarosa angry with you. Reason: you know she’s gonna’ go there on that a@%!

I must say that I am glad that they both kept their composure. Too many times women are stereotyped just for having an opinion. The producers knew EXACTLY what they were doing with this match up and these ladies caused enough drama to make the media rounds this week. Plus it makes for very entertaining daytime TV. Snaps for everyone!

I am glad that they didn't have to get ignorant or curse at each other and they both kept working. This is a big lesson on how to get your point across, and make someone look stupid at the same time. Flavor of Love girls, take notes!

Wow! What a great discussion point. I always wondered how they keep it together and look so happy. Now, Will and Jada Smith have let us into a few of the secrets of their long-lasting marriage. What do you think about it? (More pics after the break...)

Will Smith, 39, opens up to Reveal magazine about a few of the reasons that his 10-year marriage with actress Jada Pinkett-Smith has worked so well. Source

"Our perspective is, you don't avoid what's natural and you're going to be attracted to people." he says.

"And if it came down to it, then one would say to the other: 'Look, I need to have sex with somebody. Now, I'm not going to if you don't approve of it'."

An intersting topic indeed. This is something you should discuss amongst your circle and in your relationship.

Whatever they are doing is working. I am not saying I would do it, but I am saying that if I was married to Will Smith I would do it! Intelligent, fun and fine as hell! Plus, when your husband is bringing home $20 million checks on a consistent basis, we can compromise on some things.

Why do people think that married people don't have sex outside their marriage? Most people just don't get caught. I'd rather have it out in the open. Many of the people who may be looking down on them are either divorced or are being cheated on and don't even know it because they are so closed minded and are not even willing to understand a viewpoint outside their own. Our community is so judgmental, which is why people lie in the first place.

If this was an option in marriage, a person may be more inclined to be completely honest with their mate. Whereas, many husbands wouldn't dream of even telling their wife that they are attracted to another woman (or man). Do you think that it is likely that your husband/wife has ever been attracted to a person outside your marriage? Does he/she tell you about their attractions? Can you imagine what else they may not have told you? Of course not everyone is cheating, but everyone thinks that its not their problem...until it is their problem. Would you be willing to have an open marriage if it meant the alternative was divorce?

Single people, would you participate in an open marriage encounter with a married man/woman? A single person, who normally would not have sex with a married person, might make an exception for an open marriage if the wife/husband was ok with it...or if it was Will or Jada Smith!

I'm sure people of every religious background will be able to find text on how "wrong" this situation might be. Will and Jada are of Christian Faith. Ask yourself: Does ANYONE follow Christianity to the "T"? Whether you lie, steal, look at porn sites, covet, judge other people, whatever it is, it's just as wrong as the next Christian's vice.

Times have changed and with all of the things going on in the world, you have to get creative to make things work. If both people are happy, then great! Wasn’t that the goal?

Friday

Tonight, D’Mite (AKA Bomani Armah) the “not-a-rapper” will be performing at the Artmosphere Café in Mt. Rainier, MD. The show begins at 9pm and is $10. This guy is talented and hilarious!

Half Japanese Band will be at the Rock and Roll Hotel tonight starting at 8:30 pm for $12. These guys are still at it after 30 years, so I know they rock! Julie Ocean and Aliens will perform as well.

You can groove to the Platinum Pied Pipers’ 60s inspired funk music, starting at 9pm at the Black Cat tonight for $15 ($12 in advance).

Steel Pulse is playing at the 9:30 club tonight for $25. The Fear Nuttin’ band will also be in attendance. If you are a reggae fan, you NEED to be here!

On Saturday:

Alejandro Escovedo, veteran rock/pop singer and songwriter, will be playing at the 9:30 club for $20.

Brad Paisley, one of country music’s finest, will be performing at the Nissaan Pavillion at 7:30. Tickets range from $25 - $55.

Since the Brazialian Girls band is about to drop a new album in August, its only right that they visit the City to bless us with their unique electronic sound. They will be performing at the 9:30 Club at 11pm. Price : $25.

Sunday:
Freddie McGregor, reggae performer, will be at the Crossroads on Sunday. Doors open at 5pm and the show starts at 7pm.

The 127 band will be in full effect by the time 9:oo rolls around on Sunday at the Black Cat. Bows and Arrows will be there as well. The whole show is $8. Woohoo!

The Catfish Blues band, Marfa , The Shakes and a whole host of others will be rockin at the Rock and Roll Hotel starting at 7:30pm. With this lineup, I would dare be late and miss part of the show. Doors open at 7pm.

Friday is scorching!

Allen Iverson Celebrity Classic Party at Love tonight for all those 21 and older. The tickets are starting at $20 but if you don’t want to pay in advance, I’d bring extra cash to get in the door if I were you. Doors open at 9pm.

Friday is Ladies’ Night at Ultrabar, so legal ladies are free all night. Ladies if you bareley legal (18+ ) you may have to pay a small entry fee, but guys, you have to be 21 to get in. With three dance floors, the DJs will be spinning everything from Electro, Hip Hop, Salsa, House music, and much more.

DJ Quiksilva will be spinning at Ibiza tonight while the ladies of AKA celebrate their 100 year-old sorority. To enjoy happy hour, you’ll want to be there by 7. The party starts at 10pm.

Black Catatonia is gonna’ break out the turntables and bust a move! Okay, I need to update my slang vocabulary, but for now, I need to get ready because the fun starts at 10pm at the Black Cat ($5 – Backstage)

Saturday

The long-awaited “Welcome to DC” Concert will be a real live party at Love featuring DC’s own Wale!

Famous DJ, George Acosta will spin for us at Ibiza on Saturday night. I’m ready! Doors open at 10pm.

International Saturdays are in effect at the Avenue, starting with an open bar from 10 -11 and three DJ playing every kind of music you can think of. Drink specials all night! Party from 10am-3am.

For a mature 21+, you would enjoy Soul Food Saturdays at H2O starting at 9pm. This event will be hosted by WKYS’s Jeannie Jones.

Sunday:

Barrack Accepts Jesse’s Apology

Man this guy just keeps getting cooler. I am starting to think people are planting these media “landmines” just so that Barrack Obama can come out looking even cooler on the other side. By now, you’ve heard about the remarks Jesse Jackson made about Obama to a fellow FOX news guest. If you haven’t heard, then crawl from beneath your rock and click on the link below.

The comments made by Jackson, which he thought to be private, were picked up by a “hot mic”. New rule #1 : Even though Kyra Phillips schooled us all on this back in 06, lets review. If you are wearing a mic pack, DO NOT, under any circumstances, make any personal statements or say anything that would embarrass you or any of your family members. Jesse learned a hard lesson in front of the entire world and apologized for his actions like a real man should.

Obama, AKA coolest man alive, has already accepted the apology.

The best part of the video was the look on the other guy’s face. We’ll call him Mike Myers until I figure out who he is…and we’ll refer to Jesse as Kanye for now.
The worst part - "O’Smiley" looked as happy as a kid on Christmas morning reporting this.

Eyebar on Tuesday Night

The Eyebar was even more packed than usual on Tuesday night thanks to DMV-raised superstars Raheem DeVaughn and Tabi Bonney. Raheem had the second floor on lock as he crooned to fans over various dj-spun hits. He delivered a smooth melodic performance well into the morning... That man had his work face on!

Tabi was chillin' doin him, checking out the scene. Cool dude. He was on the clock as well with the more laid back approach of mingling with the crowd. With his style and work ethic, I predict that he won't be able to do this mingling thing for much longer – not without a bodyguard that is. It's only a matter of time. Check these dudes out and cop those albums...it's time to show some love to our natives.

Most of the time when I want to know what's going down in the city I keep my ear to the street. The only problem with that is that is those big ass healthy DC Rats are running the streets! So I check out these Websites. Not all of them are always accurate so I normally check them all when I can....
